Are your Sales People ‘product flogging, brochure dropping, order taking reps’?

By Glenn Dobson

Good products sell well; but they don’t sell by themselves.

If your sales team doesn’t know how to adapt the way they sell to the way your customers want to buy, even your best products could be consigned forever to the ‘lost opportunities’ section of your business.

Too many companies overlook this fact and don’t pay much attention while hiring and managing their sales people.

They think their products are so good that anyone can sell them, but this can be a dangerous mistake.

Recently, impressed by the positive reviews received by our customised sales training courses around Australia, an organisation approached us. Their problem was that their market share was not improving.

The company had recently upgraded and repackaged all its products, and it was an accepted fact within the industry that its products now were miles ahead of others. The sales figures, nevertheless and inexplicably, registered no improvement.

The case was not unique so for two weeks around Australia our sales training specialists accompanied the sales team whenever they went on a sales call.

We soon unearthed the root cause—almost all of the sales people were ‘product flogging, brochure dropping, order taking reps’, and were only able to talk about their products features (no benefits), and weren’t able to uncover how their products would relate to the customers business goals

We then implemented a rigorous ‘Hearts and Minds’ sales training and coaching program for them which also included sales management training and sales pipeline training and field coaching and within only a couple of months their sales results improved dramatically.

What happens when this is the issue?

It is the sales people who bring new customers and ensure repeat sales from old customers. Irrespective of how good your products are, if your sales people are not well versed in the art of ‘selling how your customers buy’, your sales results are likely to move in only one direction—down – as the market changes around you.

A below par sales team may cause you to lose your existing customers. On top of it, it may fail to guarantee a regular flow of new ones. So, in effect, your loss is twofold and the consequences can be dire.

How to solve this issue?

Sales managers play the most definite role in the hiring process, and it is with them the responsibility of hiring professional sales people, not ‘product flogging, brochure dropping, order taking reps’ must lie.

A good sales manager may not necessarily be a good recruiter, a position that demands certain skills however  these skills can be acquired.

Here are a few tips to improve the hiring skills of your sales managers:

Know the specific skills you require.

Before interviewing candidates, as a manager, you must be aware of the specific skills you need in your sales persons. Sounds simple however do you need a ‘Hunter – Cold Caller; a ‘Farmer’ or account manager: a networker/relationship builder; or someone who will service your existing customers to death?

Ask the right questions in an interview.

While not easy, a sales recruiting program can help your managers become better interviewers. As the needs of different industries are different, it is best if your managers adopt a customised program specifically developed to your industry, rather than an off the shelf course that will give them core competency and Behavioural Event Interviewing skills then they have a far between chance of recruiting the right person.

Match the training to the role

For instance, sales people in a call centre must participate in a call centre training program rather than a ‘field sales training program, as it will offer them most value. Sounds simple however doesn’t always happen

Experience doesn’t always matter.

A sales person with a proven track record might appear to be a safer bet than a novice however they can often be embedded in old ways and not flexible to adapting to how you want them to work.

If you are hiring new sales people, while they might not have the skills or experience, if you ensure that you give them proper direction, sales training and field coaching then you start to develop your team, rather than managing the remnants of someone else’s

Focus on their Pipeline

Your Sales Pipeline in the backbone of your future prosperity. So drive the number of opportunities each person has in their Pipeline then help them convert those opportunities through your field coaching

95 kms Cycle Before Breakfast! By Glenn Dobson

A few months ago on a KONA sales training program in Sydney I was introduced to a charity called Fighting Chance Fighting Chance were organising a 1,100 km cycle ride from Brisbane to Sydney to raise funds to help young people with severe disabilities to lead a more normal life and over the last few months KONA clients and friends have been making donations to raise $15,000 to buy new equipment Today 17 blokes from 7 different countries flew into Brisbane airport and spent the afternoon reassembling bicycles, carbo loading and talking rubbish, all in preparation for a 5am start tomorrow After a high carbohydrate meal each rider was presented with their own bike shirt, in the manner of receiving a State of Origin shirt or a Baggy Green We also each received a very moving note from one of the disabled teenagers and I am proud to be riding on behalf of Robert Mockbel, shown in this picture However tomorrow the talking stops and we start the first leg of the 1.100 km ride from Brisbane to the Gold Coast Stay in touch and if you would like to follow us I will be posting an update regularly as we battle saddle sores, potholes, ocean winds and impatient drivers Alternatively if you could make a small donation I and Robert will be extremely grateful Go to https://makingadifference.gofundraise.com.au/page/DobsonG

On the Job Sales Training by Garret Norris

On the Job Sales Training by Garret Norris

I was speaking with a Sales Director the other day on a sales training workshop, talking about sales activity, and he told me a story that I can hardly believe.

He was out with a member of his sales team on a call delivering on the job sales training in Sydney and they made a call to a company. After a long conversation with a non-decision maker he asked “if their Director or Project Manager was in today?”

The response was “yes he is somewhere around would you like me to see if he is available?”

The sales guy quite sincerely said “no, no that’s okay, could you just give him my card and ask him to call me”.

Well as you can imagine I was horrified hearing this. I asked why on earth would he not have pushed to see him while he was there? The response was “he is KPI’d on visits as well as revenue………”

On further investigation he told me that they are struggling to achieve sales targets however at a recent industry awards evening they secured 6 Gold and 1 Bronze awards which should be used to leverage opportunities with existing clients, and a very targeted prospect list.

When the rep was asked further why he didn’t pursue the decision maker further, especially as the Sales Director was with him, the salesman replied “It wouldn’t have made a difference as I keep getting beaten on price because our competition are cheaper”.

Our client strongly believes that they can become the leading company in their sector in Australia and New Zealand. The only way the will get there though is through solid sales training and on the job coaching to give their people the skills and confidence to change the “knock on the door” culture and move the team into solid sales professionals.

From a study conducted by Harvard Business, of the 479 U.S. business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business, only 101 have a sales curriculum, and a mere 15 offer either an MBA in sales or some sort of sales-oriented graduate curriculum. Sales may be vital to businesses, but of the 350,000 students a year who earn bachelor’s degrees in business from American universities, and the 170,000 who earn MBAs, only a tiny fraction have been taught anything about it.

What are your sales people? Professional visitors or relationship builders?

KONA Group is riding Brisbane to Sydney to support Fighting Chance, by Glenn Dobson

On 27 February 2014, I will be cycling 1,000 kms from Brisbane to Sydney to raise more than $250,000 for Fighting Chance – a charity that creates opportunities for young adults with significant physical disabilities to access employment and social participation programs.

Along with 14 other riders the reason I’m attempting the 1000 kms Brisbane to Sydney ride is that I’ve been fortunate to be able to conquer some of the world’s major sporting challenges, however, I’m inspired by the amazing work Fighting Chance do on a daily basis.

In 2012, I fulfilled a 13 year dream and completed the Hawaii Ironman, in Kona. In 2011, I ran 250 kms across the Sahara Desert before representing Australia in the Triathlon World Championships in Las Vegas. Then, in 2010 I fought Heavy Weight boxing champion John Hopoate, then 6 days later ran 475 kms across the Simpson Desert to raise $32,000 for Breast Cancer patients.

The Fighting Chance team help people with disabilities to live a better life, when every day is a challenge that makes the Sahara and Hawaii Ironman pale into significance, and for that reason the KONA Group want to help in our own small way to make a difference to their work.

So can I ask you to please help me raise funds for this great cause and donate what you can at https://makingadifference.gofundraise.com.au/page/DobsonG

(Your donation is tax deductible).

To get more information on the ride and what Fighting Chance plans to do with the funds you donate please go to  https://www.tourdechance.com.au/fighting-chance/

Thank you very much for your support as we all genuinely appreciate it and please take a minute or two to think about friends in your network that you might feel comfortable sharing this email with.

Don’t be a Business Ostrich

Hiding in the corner of your business is a costly and growing problem and it’s time it was addressed. With 60-65% of the population affected you could call it an epidemic and it’s causing decreased productivity, and increasing sick leave and insurance costs. Combining obesity with increased depression, work stress, inactivity, 80% of the population will or have suffered neck or back pain and we have a cocktail of failure. For millions of years people were upright and mobile and now continual sitting and inactivity is accepted as normal and we are asking workers to do something the body was never designed for. In a sporting environment under performing members are relegated or released, yet with the above statistics it appears the business world is accepting poor performance. Business has embraced sedentary producing technology and therefore shoulders much of the responsibility; technology is here to stay and the innovative companies are planning for the future with health programs. Here are a few suggestions to start a health program and increase productivity…
  1. Add a health and fitness aspect to the widely accepted pre screening psychological testing.
  2. Take steps to creating a healthy culture with healthy eating days and encouraging alcohol in moderation.
  3. Ask your OH&S committee to address health in the workplace.
Sporting teams and athletes are able to perform at incredible levels by concentrating on health and fitness and your team will improve their performance with a similar focus. A healthy and productive business begins with healthy people. For more information please contact Timothy Kitching at the KONA Group on 1300 611 288 or email info@kona.com.au

8 Tools that make Online Profiles an Executive Decision, by David Coe

Social media is transforming the way the big end of town communicates with professional and retail investors, fund managers, the media and market commentators. Smart executives are realising how to take advantage of this trend to build their online presence and achieve their career objectives. As the buy and sell sides increasingly adopt social media, smart executives are joining the conversations, raising their profile, and expanding their networks. They are connecting with people who can help them professionally. Some of the most important developments in Australia and overseas that are driving major corporations to use social media are:
  • Bloomberg now pumps Twitter messages on equities, currencies, commodities and bonds to the desktops of professional investors, brokers, analysts and the media
  • The ASX requires companies to be aware of what is being said about them on social media so they can respond appropriately
  • 62% of UK brokers and heads of trading desks says social media is influencing share prices
  • The New York Stock Exchange is giving tips to companies on how to use social media to engage investors
  • 66% of business journalists have written stories based on social media.
If you are looking for opportunities at the big end of town, hang out where they do. When you are there, it is important to know what channels to use because building a strong online presence is a lot more than getting likes on Facebook. Different forms of social media are suited to different uses and different types of information. When you make the most of their individual strengths, your efforts have maximum impact and you reach more of the people who can help you achieve your career goals. You do not need to use all of them and should use only those ones that will reach your target audiences. LinkedIn: When someone wants to find out more about you and types your name into Google, your LinkedIn profile most likely to head the results. That’s why the starting place for a strong online presence is your LinkedIn profile. Twitter has become the social media channel of choice for the financial markets. It is used by brokers, analysts, fund manager, SMSF investors, and business journalists. It may be restricted to 140 characters but this makes it ideal for headline-type announcements and alerts. YouTube is more than a site for videos. It is now a giant search engine owned by Google. Be found here for your area of expertise and you take a powerful step forward in your authority. Facebook allows sharing and commentary, which in turn creates a community among followers. It is best for consumer brands and suburban businesses to engage customers. Other channels are more appropriate for building professional authority. Pintrest is ideal for newsworthy graphs and information graphics. If you have data, create graphics to tell the story. Slideshare hosts presentations for others to find. When you give a presentation, post a copy here with a link from your website. Flickr hosts photos of your annual meeting, investor days and other events you want to capture visually. Smartphones mean that people can carry the internet in their pocket so be smart and build a powerful online presence to take advantage of the technology we take for granted.

Power Point Presentations That Work

Presentations of all types have a similar objective – to convey a message. Power Point is a fabulous tool to support your objective and has its own set of rules. Try these powerful steps…
  1. Get clear on what you want to achieve from your presentation.
  2. Choose appropriate images, graphs, charts etc and Lead Your Listeners Through Them. While the information to you is obvious it’s probably new to your listeners. e.g. When the below graph is displayed people will be trying to decipher the information as you speak and this will cause confusion.
Are you reading across or reading down? Did you start talking about the great profits etc?

  3. Here’s what to do. A) Display the title and provide background information B) Display the headings and describe them briefly C) Display item by item or line by line or column by column and describe in as much detail as required. OR if necessary show the entire graph and… D) Lead them through by directing them to your starting point and which direction you will be moving. Say ‘we budgeted wwww in January and sold 1234’ because of… Remove the assumptions from your presentations and lead your listeners on a guided tour and make sure you convey your message Clearly and Concisely.
